OpenCandy Removal

Win32/OpenCandy is an adware program that is normally packaged together with another program like a toolbar or free online game.

The main purpose of the OpenCandy program is to gather information about the computer, it’s location and other such information to pass onto a remote server. This information is generally used to pass on related advertisements to the user.

In most cases adware like OpenCandy is not malicious in nature and perfectly legal. However many terms of service are not clear and upfront with users on what the adware program will be doing.

For instance if you where to download a Toolbar like Contoso Toolbar and it was bundled with OpenCandy, you may not be told exactly what you are getting when you go to install the program. That or it may be purposely buried deep within the user agreement. Think of apples 52 page agreement as an example. Who is really going to take the time to read all those pages.

As the Toolbar installs you may get promted to download another program. This is the purpose of OpenCandy. It attempts to match computers and users to specific related software tailed for the end user. This is common marketing practices.

At that time the user can decline the install or install the program if they so choose. Once that is done, OpenCandy is normally removed from the system automatically.

Traces of the OpenCandy adware may be left over after the install. In most cases a search for OpenCandy in the registry is all that is needed to locate the adware. We at removevirus.org suggest you simply do a scan with your favorite antivirus client to remove any traces found.

OpenCandy is not a malicious threat but it is potentially un-wanted software.
