Windows Security & Control is a rouge anti-spyware program a clone of Windows Optimization Center, Privacy Corrector and PC optimizer 2010. Like most rogue or fake security clients, this product attempts to trick users into making a purchase of the software by using false and exaggerated scan results and attempting to use the Windows (Microsoft) logo and trade mark. These kinds of false security clients are nothing new. Stay away from this software and do not make a purchase of it.

At this time it appears this software is not stealing any personal data. It’s just a software scam were they attempt to trick you into making a purchase. Uninstalling this client through the control panel will not work.

When Windows Security & Control infects a system, it usually comes up with notifications like these:

Microsoft Security Essentials detected potential threats that might compromise your privacy or damage your computer. Your access to these items may be suspended until you take an action. Click “Show details” to learn more.

The detected vulnerability may result in unauthorized access to private information and hard drive data with a serious possibility of irreversible data loss and unstable PC performance. To remove the malware please run a full system scan. Press ‘OK’ to install the software necessary to initiate system files check. To complete the installation process please reboot your computer.

How to stop the above process

Option 1. To Stop this process you can either browse to the file location shown below and re-name the file and then restart your computer. Now browse to that file location again and delete the file.

Option 2. Boot into safe mode and browse to the below folder for you Operating System

Option 3. Log into a different user account and either browse to the file below and delete it or use your antivirus client to remove it by running a scan.

The next step in Windows Security & Control removal is to delete the following file:

Windows XP:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\protect.exe
  • C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Temp\updatecheck.dll

Windows Vista/7:

  • c:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\protect.exe
  • c:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\updatecheck.dll

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\JP595IR86O ( May be unique file name to your infection )
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ Protect.exe
