Remove Privacy Protection

What is Privacy Protection?

Privacy Protection sounds like a great idea but this program does nothing to protect it. It's a malware program. The purpose of this program is to trick you into making a purchase. Read on to learn how to full remove Privacy Protection from your computer. We have written several other guides on this same threat. It goes by several differ net names including Security Protection, Malware Protection, Spyware Protection, Advanced Security Tool 2010, Security Central, Home Personal Antivirus, XP Deluxe Protector, Win PC Antivirus, Win PC Defender, XP Police Antivirus, IE-Security, WinDefender 2009 and Total Secure 2009 ect… you get the point. These guys have been operating for years.

How Did I get infected with Privacy Protection?

I was not there so I could not tell you for sure. All I know is it wasn't me! In most cases people get infected from installing a codec of video update. They think they are installing a real program but no…. it's malware you just installed.

There are other things that could of caused this like a drive by download but in most cases this is user induced.

What is Privacy Protection Doing to My Computer Right Now?

This client is mostly benign. I say that but I know it's causing you big issues. What this threat is doing is it will block legitimate programs from running and it often times highjacks your browser settings, re-directing you to a website they are marketing or selling a product on. In non of our testing's of this threat did I find it to be passing on personal information like passwords or bank info. Still you should be careful. It's not uncommon for people who get infected with a virus to have several more running with out the user even knowing

The scan results this program gives off are all fake. They say you have a kazillion viruses but it's not really true. They may even warn that you are BEING HACKED RIGHT NOW!!!!! It's all a scam. These bogus messages are there to scare you into purchasing the program. If you look close enough I bet you will find several miss spellings in the user interface.

Privacy Protection Removal Video for Windows 7 and Vista. Works for XP as well but you will need to use the manual guide to locate the file paths.

Privacy Protection Manual Removal Procedures

The below file is the main executable that needs to be killed of and deleted.

  • Privacy Protection.exe ( This file name will mutate and change over time. Expect your file name to be different )

Know File Path Locations

XP

  • C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\

    C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\ApplicationData\Local\Temp\

Vista / Windows 7: One of the below

  • c:\users\[username]\AppData\local\
  • C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Temp\
  • C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\

To Stop this process you can

A. You can use the above folder paths to find this file. It should be hiding in one of them. You may need to show hidden files and folders. If that is the case you can read this guide http://www.removevirus.org/show-hidden-files-and-folders. Once you are in the folder you can sort the files by date. This helps to reduce the possibilities down to like 2-3 files. From there pick the date you became infected and re-name the file then re-boot and delete the file the next time you log-in.

B.  Boot into Safe Mode and delete the file. Same as the above but only the process should not be running so you can just delete it.

C:  Use the Task Manager  to find the location of the file and re-name it then delete after re-boot. Most people will have this disabled and not working. However some users can use it the very second you log into the operating system. You have about 10 seconds to locate the file before the Task Manager will close.

D:  Log-into another users account and see if you can delete the file.

E:  Start the Task Manager the very second you login and terminate the process that way.

The next step in Privacy Protection removal is to delete the following file. You NEED to re-boot your computer first if you re-named the file as you can not remove a file that is running.

If you are unable to find the Executable you need to delete then you should boot into safe mode with Networking and install the Spyware Doctor with Antivirus Client and run a full scan.
