How to Not Get Infected Again

Straight to the Point
1.  Get a good antivirus client and keep it up to date.

I understand some people think free clients will protect them.  You are wrong.  As someone with over a dozen years in the industry I can tell you that and not feel bad.  Free clients are free for a reason.  The adage "You Get What You Pay For" fits nicely here.

2.  Keep your computers operating system and programs up to date and patched.  This goes double for web browsers and Java.  Basically ensure you have auto updates turned on or you install the updates in a timely fashion.

3.  Don't download attachments in an e-mail unless you trust the source.  Even then it may not be safe so use prudence.

4. Email:  Don't follow any link in an e-mail.  Not even if it looks to be from a trusted source.  Banks will never provide a direct login link and you did not win money or inheritence. They are scams.

4.  The web is NOT safe. If you Google "Liberty Bell" or "Balled Eagles"  don't think that the links shown are safe websites.  Thousands of good sites get hacked every day and malicious code may be on the site.  This is why you need security software like Spyware Doctor with Antivirus.

5.  NO security software is 100% bullet proof.  Thousands of new threats come out or mutate every day.  Most likely this will never change.  That is why you need to keep your computer software up to date and patched.

6.  If you have kids then create limited user accounts for all of them and do not give out your admin password.  This will make it so they cannot install software programs.

If you follow the simple advice above chances are you will not get infected again with a virus for a very long time.  If by chance you do get infected then you know where to go to get help :)

FYI:  Do not be too hard on a child for infecting your computer with a virus.  Instead use it a a learning point to teach them about scams and not to give out or provide their information online.  Work the whole social website safety thing into the mix and something good may come out of your infected computer.

A good opinion as it is based on your past experience.

Years ago I used to just tell people to use free clients. However 95% of them do not offer live protection. That means they only work after you are infected with a virus and by then it’s often too late for the normal person to remove the threat with out expert help.

Even if you go to just trusted websites your still asking for trouble if you do not have active protection. Ten’s of thousands of websites get hacked every day and malicious code injected onto them. Some times false advertisers are able to trick major companies into having malisious codes onto websites. With out ample protection you will get infected even with taking your advice about web surfing.

You do have a great argument about safe web browsing. This alone will cut down on I would say 80% of infections. If you add in the free clients you are using then yes I would say you are mostly there and chances are you will not get an infection if you keep ALL those programs up to date as well as your operating system, web browser, java software ect..

For most people multiple users will use that single computer in the home. If you have a child and have nothing but free clients installed you will get a virus, it’s just matter of time. A paid client can go a very long ways in protecting you so you don’t have to have several programs installed and always ensure all your software is up to date.

Well I for one have tried multiple paid Antivirus programs, and each one seems to be worse then Avast, the free version. Norton seems to be the worst of them all as it detected very little stuff. I have also used PC Tools Spyware Doctor before, and didn’t like how it performed either, along with the Uniblue software that many people hype about.

All of my security software is free, and for the last 3 years(since I started using them) I have been virus and spyware free. The only way to not get infected is to be smart while you are online. Don’t click on ads or banners, play the Facebook or other social network games, add anyone on a social network that you don’t know, browse through porn sites, search for major celebrities(and just click random sites), or click random links you have no clue what it is about or are unsure if the site is safe/trusted.

Personally I use Avast free, Comodo Firewall free, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, McAfee SiteAdvisor, and CCleaner to keep my computer clean. You can keep the paid programs as I didn’t have near the luck with them that I do with the free ones I use.

If your gunna play around on the internet like a kid in a candy store, you are going to get infected as not all software will detect everything. One way to check what looks to be a link is to hover your mouse over the link and look in the lower left corner of your browser, if the link is different then what is shown on the page, don’t click it, its probably a phishing/scam link.
