Developing story: A new malware attack on an estimated 60+ banks is ongoing. At the time of this writing over 60 million euros have been confirmed stolen with an estimated 1.6 billion euros possibly stolen.
What is Happening?
It seems from early reports that some bank servers have been infected with multiple malware strains that are working together to coordinate a sophisticated attack on banks. High dollar bank accounts are having small sums of money transferred to mule accounts that the hackers control.
RemoveVirus.org has been told that the Zeus malware threat has played a role in the compromising of the bank accounts. How the malware got installed on this many bank servers is still unknown. Many IT managers are going to have to explain what happened here.
This scale of an attack on so many banks at the same time is u-heard of. While I know mafia and organized crime to be behind many malware releases it’s hard to even imagine this kind of sophistication in that world.
While I offer no proof I have a hunch we are seeing a government sponsored kind of attack against banks.
