You'll enjoy plenty of peaceful open countryside on this route, a stroll on a public footpath through the grounds of Blakesware Manor, and of course a visit to either of the lovely pubs in the village of Wareside itself. As with other Hertfordshire themed articles on this blog, youll notice that many of the walks in Hertfordshire I have detailed here are on the eastern side of the county Im hoping to explore a bit more of the countryside in west Hertfordshire in the coming year. Lilley1.5 milesThis first route option is a short pub walk from the village of Lilley. A decade on and with four Buggy Walks established in the area, approximately 180 people now take part in the walks every month. You'll also enjoy lots of fresh air on this one, and the hills on the route will also offer some nice views and work up a bigger appetite for your visit to the village pub towards the end of the route. You can then visit the Farm itself at the bottom of the hill for a fee if you wish, before the walk then lops back up the hill to the start point where there is then a little diversion to a pub for food and refreshments. The tree sits on top of a slope and has exposed roots creating a magnificent natural climbing frame you can clamber over the roots or hide in the cave-like space beneath them. Bramfield Woods is located between the villages of Datchworth, Bramfield and Watton at Stone, each of which has an decent pub. There are trees to climb, dens to build and its great to explore by bike. Ive just detailed a couple of walks here which we have enjoyed. This route has some extra countryside walking to make up the extra distance, it takes you on a stroll through the pretty Graffidge Wood, and then towards the end the walk it takes you on a public path through the gorgeous grounds of Knebworth House. The 8.6 km walk includes Woldingham School, Godstone Vineyards, sections of the North Downs Way trail and the Great Church Wood nature reserve. If you opt for a walk between the villages, I would suggest parking in Watton at Stone and starting off on the Watton circular walk detailed below. It's a great one for the kids as you'll first go on a little adventure up into the woodlands surrounding the reserve, before then descending down into the open heathland where you'll visit a large sculpture of what they will believe is a 'real Dinosaur' egg. They are slow-paced walks of approximately 1 hours. Wareside3.75 milesThis is a lovely circular and relatively flat ramble in the countryside to the north east of the village of Wareside. Step Forth Buggy Walks began in Falkirk in 2009 when a few mums and their babies went on a 30-minute walk from a local health centre. Most of the surface is self binding aggregate, with the final 1km at the western end at Welwyn Garden City being tarmac." There is a fee to get into the gardens though, and the gardens close for the winter, so please visit their website to check before visiting. There are also walking loops off the Nickey Line that take you to Rothampsted Park and Rothampsted Estate if you prefer more of a circular walk. Finally, you'll also enjoy the quaint village of Aldbury itself, with it's fantastic pub that does get busy, so book ahead! Park at the top for free (near Clarence Park - Google it) and walk right down past the pier for a good mile or so walk. Despite being close to London, there are plenty of beautiful rural spots in Hertfordshire. There are no facilities at Pegsdon Hills and Hoo Bit Nature Reserve. Jockey End5.75 milesThis fourth option is our longest, most varied and most strenuous walk from Jockey End. It flows for nearly 50 miles through Hertfordshire to London.
