XP Antispyware 2010, which is also known as XPAntispyware2010, belongs to the family of Operating System-specific rogue anti-spyware programs to which Win 7 Antispyware 2010 and Vista Antispyware 2010 belong. XP Antispyware 2010 gets installed on the user’s computer via Trojans that get downloaded from dangerous websites. Once installed, this rogue software performs fake system scans on the user’s computer, returning false results that show that the user’s system is under threat from a large number of dangerous malware programs. It also generates endless fake pop-ups from the Windows taskbar warning that the user’s computer is under threat. The aim of all this activity is to try and convince the user to purchase the license to the ‘full’ version of XP Antispyware 2010 by claiming that the currently installed ‘trial’ version is incapable of properly removing the detected false ‘threats’. However, it is important to remember that XP Antispyware 2010 is a fake application and therefore none of its versions can scan or clean any system.

1. XP Antispyware

I am not a computer expert so i have a basic question. Instead of downloading the spyware remover etc.. why not do a system restore using Windows XP and reset it back to the time/day before the virus hit and then do complete system scan using spybot to check for any virusus?. what is the downside of doing this?

2. GREAT question. I used to do

GREAT question. I used to do this all the time in the field. However most times these threats inject themselves in the system restores. So even if you do a restore you will still be infected.

In recent cases many of these clients are now also disabling system restore so we do not normally even recommend going this route. However if you have a backup of all your files then you can definitely try going this route first and then run a full scan using a security client.

3. I give up!!!

You were correct. I restored the system and scanned with anti virus software and thought the computer was clean. The virus was still in the computer and came back when rebooted. My browser has been hijacked since and i have tried root kill then Malwarebytes, Avast and it is still there.. Each time i run malware bytes and kill the AVE.exe file the xp antispyware pop-ups go away but they come back when rebooted. The browser is hijacked by some pnp command..

You could always use the client we recommend that is proven to fully remove this virus, or use the www.onlinecomputerrepair.org service. Sounds like you have some hidden root kits on your computer. Having a pro at onlinecomputerrepair.org repair your computer sounds to me like the best option for your situation.

5. Corrupted Programs

Hi, my laptop has been infected by Antispyware XP and it has now stopped me being able to open any programs or executable files so I can't use Malwarebytes or Spyware Doctor to get rid of it. I remember my friend had a similar problem with Paladin a few months ago and he downloaded a file that jammed all Paladin activity so that he could install some antispyware software that was able to remove the infection. Any info on how to get rid of this would be most helpful, thanks, Marcus

6. The above process works very

The above process works very well. We used it to remove this threat on our test computers. What exactly are you having a problem doing? What step are you stuck at.

The first thing that needs to happen is to stop the Antspyware XP executable. Most of the time you can simply re-name this file and then re-boot your computer. From there you should be able to install a security client and auto remove the threat or follow the rest of the guide and manually remove it.

7. Error message

Whenever I try to open any program or executable file I get an error message box saying that I don't have the "appropriate permissions" to open it. AVG has stopped working and I can't install any further spyware removal software. Where would I find the av.exe file to delete it? Would this then allow antispyware software to deal with the infection? Thanks so much.

8. THe above process...

The above process did work. I found the file in windows/prefetch. I renamed the file, deleted it, and then rebooted.

As soon as I tried internet explorer to update the virus protection, it all came back. It had stopped and the other problems were gone until I tried to go online.

I am not familiar with deleting registry keys, what else did I miss?

Thank you.

9. Sounds like you missed the

Sounds like you missed the main section of the program.

Go to %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\ and see if the trace is hiding there. The Prefetch folder is simply junk temp files and deleting anything from there is not going to help.

You can also go to the run command and type msconfig. From there go under startup and uncheck the running process or processes you wish to stop. Then re-boot and try it again. I bet it will work for you.

Also starting in safe mode with networking mat help you download and install a security client.

Hope it helps.
