QUICK UPDATE:  We already have created an XP removal Video for Security Tool.  Now we have a Windows 7 and Vista one as well.  Read Below for both Videos.

Security Tool is a clone of System Security and Total security 2009. You may want to look at those removal guides as well to help you gain a full grasp on exactly what this client is and what it does. Basically it follows in it's predecessors foot steps and runs the same type of scam. this program blocks most other traces from running on your computer. Removal can be very very hard for this one so read the full guide before attempting it.

( We tested it and it works to fully remove this threat.  Please note you will need to install it and update it in safe mode with networking ) Special thanks to www.onlinecomputerrepair.org for letting us know about this threat.  They told us it's one of the hardest strains they have had to remove from computers so far this year.  There is no shame in needing a professional to remove something like this for you.  If you find the below removal guide too hard to follow then we recommend you pay the 89.99 to have www.onlinecomputerepair.org remove the threat for you.

Security Tool if you could not already tell is a bogus security client.  This threat seems to be from the same makers of Total Security 2009 and System Security.  In our Total Security 2009 video we showed you how hard this program can be to remove.  What makes this thing so hard to kill off is the program terminating every executable process right after you open the program.

The good news here is you simply need to stop this program from running then you can open other programs. In most cases we found that when we got infected it was from a trojan virus that was installed on our test computer.  That trojan then went out and downloaded this fake security product.

Once installed users will find that most programs will not open and that their browser has been highjacked.

PLEASE NOTE:  In all of our testings on this threat you will not be able to run executables.  This means you may not be able to run any security programs.  Watch the video below to learn how to get around this.

Below is one of the warning messages people are getting

" Security Tool Warning Your PC is still infected with dangerous viruses"

This is a warning message made to scare you into purchasing the program.

"Security Tool Warning Spyware.IEMonster activity detected. This is spyware that attempts to steal passwords from Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Outlook and other programs. Click here to remove it immediately with SecurityTool."

This message is here to trick and scare you into purchasing a the program.  Like everything about this program it's all just lies.  Do not purchase this program because it's fake and your just throwing your money away.  Read the Security Tool removal guide below to learn more.

Some symptoms of Security Tool:

  • Bogus Scan results
  • Auto Scans on Start-up
  • Warning coming out of a fake shield in the system tray
  • pop-ups and re-directs to the fake software's website
  • constant warnings of being infected as well as false statements of other trojans

Manual removal instructions for Keyword Phrase ( Please read our disclaimer below )

Kill Keyword Phrase processes: ( Learn How to Kill a Process Here. Opens in new Window ) Also read the below section before terminating this process.

  • 4745331717.exe

Please note that the above process will not be the same as yours.  This trace file will constantly change and be dynamic.  What you need to do is look for something very similar.  It should be a total of ten numbers long followed by the .exe . We do recommend you run a full scan using Spyware Doctor with Antivirus » download. Even if you do not intend on purchasing the product it will help to stop the virus from re-installing and re-activating while you manually remove it.

Also it will inform you of any new changes to the file names. You will need this.  If no programs can run then attempt to boot into safe mode with networking and then install the SDA client and run a scan.

You will need to be in safe mode with networking to download and install this product.  This is because this threat blocks all executables in normal mode. In most cases with this threat you will need to browse to the %UserProfile%\Application Data\ folder and then look for a 8-10 digit number folder.  Should be the first one in that folder.  There you can re-name the file.  Watch the video above to show you the exact steps on doing this. It is a good idea to write down the process files name.  You will need this to remove the registry entry.

Delete Security Tool registry values: ( Learn How to Edit Registry Here. Opens in new Window )

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Security Tool HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "4745331717"

Delete files: ( Hint ) Most of these files will be in the %UserProfile%\Application Data\YOUR TEN DIGIT NUMBER PROCESS directory.

  • 4745331717.bat
  • 4745331717.cfg
  • 4745331717.exe
  • Security Tool.lnk

Delete directories: ( Please note that in most cases everything in this folder can be deleted. Just be sure it's the correct folder ;)

  • C:>Documents and Settings>YOUR USER NAME>Local Settings>Application Data\Random Number Proccess .exe

For Vista Win 7 Users the path should be

    C:\Users\%YOUR USER ACCOUNT NAME%\AppData\Local

The file is no long in a folder from my last testing 8-01-10. It is just a 7 digit number and .exe after it. In the past it was 8 digits so just look for something like 6586290.exe . If you can not delete it then re-name the file and re-boot. then delete it. If you are in safe mode you should be able to delete it with out having to re-name and re-boot.

Please keep in mind that viruses mutate and change all the time. Do expect the above to change around a little. However this guide should work well for you and any experienced pro will be able to follow it and figure out the traces if they mutate. If you do not feel comfortable deleting files and the like then consider purchasing Spyware Doctor with Antivirus or have www.onlinecomputerrepair.org remove this and all other threats for you. Just to let you know.  because security tool has become such a dangerous and popular threat we have made a dedicated site.  Check out the Security Tool site. 5. And then?

I can't thank you enough for guiding me through getting rid of the virus, but now I seem to have some residual issues. The programs that I use most, like quickbooks, and outlook are not opening correctly. Please let me know if you know of anything like that...

6. My guess is a registry issue

My guess is a registry issue may of caused this.

Step 1. Make a backup.
Step 2. Run a system restore going back a few weeks before you were infected. If you never used a security client to help remove this threat then you can also attempt that first. There may be corrupt registry entries that are not letting you execute .exe files correctly. A system restore should resolve this but I would use a good security client first.

7. Security tool virus

My computer is also infected with the Security Tool virus. I purchased Spyware Doctor and did a scan in safemode with networking and it detected the virus and removed it. I then went to normal mode and did the scan and it detected the virus and removed it....I thought. However, when I rebooted the system the Security Tool virus was back.

Any ideas how to remove this for good?

8. RARRRRRR!!!! Is all I have

RARRRRRR!!!! Is all I have to say. The SDA client works for almost all clients. I despse this virus even more when one of the best security tools out there has an issue at removing it.

My suggestion is to go into the SDA program and under settings go check the box to scan for "rootkits". My guess is a rootkit virus is re-installing this threat on your computer. What is unusual is normaly the SDA client will catch this threat if and when it trys to re-install. Be 100% sure you update the software. It may be a new mutation and if that is the case then PCTools will have a newer fix for it in just a few days. Worst case contact them for free support on the issue.

Please report back if checking the box to scan for rootkits works for you or if an update works for you. Also let use know the Windows version you are using for us to re-tests this threat against. If we find the extra trace we can report it to PCtools and help them get a fix that much faster.

9. Rootkit

I found the youtube video and followed the instructions with success.
Afterwards I ran a full scan with AVG that found the rootkit. I removed it, and all seems well so far.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I followed the directions on utube for removing it and so far it worked , my desktop is back.

But I went ahead of the game and ended sending it to the recyle bin after rebootin the computer like suggested, instead of right click into properties. I also deleted the recyle bin lol, hm

Although it seems to be gone , I keep getting those pop ups for downloading adobe reader all the time it wong go away. I am on internet 7.

So what do I all do now.

11. You still need to run a full

You still need to run a full scan using what ever security client you like best. You need to see if you have any other viruses and trojans still on your system This guide only covers the removal of Security Tool and not other threats.

Also you may want to consider re-setting IE and your Windows Hosts file.

13. Because these viruses mutate

Because these viruses mutate all the time your trace may be different.

Best thing to do is scan your computer with a good security client. While the trial versions may not remove the threat you will be able to see the exact location of the registry strings you need to remove.

Hi,

Thank you for this very informative website and the excellent YouTube video. I was able to successfully remove the virus!! So, thanks again!

21. Thanks for the feeed back and

Thanks for the feeed back and glad you found the video and site helpful.

The answer is two fold. The Security Tool threat has nothing to do with high jacking your mail and spamming others. However you may of also gotten infected with a trojan that is or has done this that is not Security Tool. This is the reason a REAL security client is needed and a scan must be done after wards. We recommend Spyware Doctor with Antivirus. They offer a free scan ( It will not remove any viruses). With the free trial you will know for sure whether or not you are infected. do not worry about the scan finding known bad sties or cookies. What you are looking for is actual real threats.

run a scan and be sure. Nothing worse then learning you infected a friend and I know you do not want your computer to be part of a botnet.

How do I navigate this to be able to remove Security Tool in Windows 7??

Gary

technical admin's picture

25. Just follow the path above

Just follow the path above given for Vista. Or download the SDA client mentioned above and run a quick scan. while the free trial will not remove anything it will show you the exact folder and file locations. Then you can jump in and manually delete the traces. You can also use Malwarebytes.

That is what I would recommend.

29. Ensure the SDA client is

Ensure the SDA client is updated and run a full scan in safe mode. Also go into the settings and check the "Scan for Rootkits" box. This seems to help those who are infected with a root kit that keeps attempting to re-install the client on boot.

You may also want to delete and junk temp files.

30. I got hit with security tool

I got hit with security tool last night, and now I am unable to do anything with my computer at all. It is a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with Window's Vista, and when I start my computer in regular mode, safe mode, and safe mode with networking, all I get is a black screen. I cannot take any of the steps to remove the virus because I am unable to do anything at all on my computer.

technical admin's picture

31. If you can't do anything at

If you can't do anything at all then it's time to call in a pro. With just a blank screen your options are limited for normal computer users. We would strongly recommend you call out a pro.

With that said here are some options.

Boot using your Vista CD and attempt a system restore.

Most likely your dell has a built in image of this and you can reload that image. Some times this may override and re-format your drive. Ensure you back your data first.

A pro will be able to use an external drive to scan and repair your vista copy in most cases. This is the best option but normally requires some mad computer skills and not for the normal person.

That is probably because you have a Vista or Windows 7 computer. There is no such real folder. The above guide mentions the location for Vista and Windows 7. Should be under the "Users" account.

37. Editing the Registry Issue

Ok, so I've gotten this far. Now, I'm just confused I guess. For example, the location of my virus (according to System Config.) is: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

However, all the stuff in my registry starts with HKEY. Any suggestions?

technical admin's picture

38. HKey is what ALL the keys

HKey is what ALL the keys start with. for example

HKLM is HKEY Local Machine.
HKCC is HKey Current User.

This is very basic stuff for registy editing. As stated in the guide this is more for pros. You are welcome to do it yourself just ensure you backup all your data and fully understand what you are doing before you start deleting things. I always recommend using a real security program. A TON less risk messing things up.

Best of luck and hope this answers your question.

hi im trying to remove security tool and i went on youtube following step by step but when i try to rename the 8 digit number it doesnt allow me to rename it what do i doo im desperate

technical admin's picture

45. re-boot into safe mode and

re-boot into safe mode and try it there. Other wise try to re-name it a few more times. You may have to re-boot your computer 3-4 times but eventually you should be able to re-name it.

You could also download the process killer tool we mention and run that. After you run it you should be able to stop the needed process and then just delete the trace file instead of re-naming it.

Anonymous's picture

46. My experience, I'm very appreciative.

Thank you guys SO much for the help. I'm not too good with computers but I simply followed your video on YouTube and it did the trick. I haven't yet figured out how to clean up the Registry but at least my comuter works again.

One thing that messed me up a little was after I renamed the file and rebooted. I'd suggest to not copy and paste the file name but rather to browse to it. I tried to copy and paste and somehow it reinstalled the Security Tool file. So, I love your helpful video but I'd say browse for the renamed file when you go to delete it.

Even up to that CAPTCHA thing below this comment you guys are awesome!

Thanks again!

47. Is Security Tool Capturing Data?

Thanks for all the comments, I will try them to remove the Security Tool Virus. Does anyone know whether the virus is hacking into computer systems for personal ID information? We've stopped payment on the credit card, which worked, but should I be concerned about the hacker getting personal info stored on my computer?

48. thanks, but...

The article/video was a lifesaver when it came to removing Security Tool... unfortunately , the virus/trojan that is causing ST to get on my computer in the first place just won't go away.

I bought Spyware Doctor on your recommendation, did a full scan and removed several trojans, but even though it says the threat is gone, after I restart my computer. Security Tool is right back in action.

Basically the trojan seems to me undetectable by Spyware Doctor. pretty frustrating, not really sure what to do besides reformat at this point.

49. Hi Steve, ensure the Security

Hi Steve,

ensure the Security client is up to date. Because these threats mutate all the time your trace may of just been added to the SDA client. This is very normal. Also you may want to go under settings and check the box for "Scan for hidden root kits". Then run a full scan. If you still have issues you can try to run the scan in safe mode and you can get free support via the PCTOOLS website or forum.
