Often times people get infected with Desktop Defender because their computers were not fully secured. This could be from lack of security updates or no active antivirus client.
Most infections happen because the users was either tricked into installing some software like a video codec or because a website thet visited was infected with malisious code and that code placeda trojan onto your computer.
Desktop Defender 2010 does the following to most computers.
- You will find out you will no longer be able to update your anti-virus program neither to access such related websites. Just running your security program will not work neither.
- Your computer will display this given window (with the Desktop Defender header), showing you lots of threats and more.
- If you don't remove this malware, similar tools like the System Registry Editor and the System Restore will not function anymore.
Desktop Defender 2010 is a fake program with the main purpose to steal your money by showing fake threats, viruses and so on. They attempt to scare and trick the user into making a purchase of the client by showing you false and missleading scan results and messages.

1. TY
Thanks for the guide. It worked to fully remove this threat on my computer.
2. Please Help
I can not seem to get the task manager to open up to end the Desktop Defender 2010.exe process? Any advice
3. Try this
go into the c:\Program Files\Desktop Defender 2010 directory and re-name the Desktop Defender 2010.exe file name to anything else. Then re-boot. You should now be able to manually delete this file.
If that does not work then boot into safe mode and delete it there.
Another option is to re-boot. Then as soon as you login to windows Immediately open up the Task Manager. Often times you are able to open it until Desktop Defender starts to run.
4. Use System Restore to Go Back in Time * IT'S EASY AND QUICK!
Go Back in Time before your system was infected by this Trojan. Here is how:
1. Click Start.
2. Point to All Programs.
3. Point to Accessories.
4. Point to System Tools.
5. Click System Restore.
6. Follow the instructions on the wizard.
This will not erase any photos or files you have created, it just takes your system back to a time when the virus was not there.

5. Thanks for this suggestion
I ended up getting DD 2010 on my computer inadvertently no thanks to the disguised interface.
The above mentioned suggestion of doing a system restore totally worked for me.
Thanks for that.
6. Besure to still Run full scan
I used to recommend this route out all the time. The problem now is most of the time the system restore feature is disabled. It was on the test computer we used to find the traces of Desktop Defender 2010.
Users should also know that in most cases these threats infect the system restore points. So even if you do a system restore you may not know it but your still infected with some trojans.
If it works to help remove your threat. Great!! Use it. However ALWAYS run a full antivirus and antispyware scan and ensure your scanner can pick up root kit trojans. This is the only way to know for sure that your computer is not infected any more.
Thanks for the posts and suggestion to the readers. Many will find it helpful
7. System restore worked!
Youre a lifesaver.
8. It Worked
Big thanks from NY. I was able to remove this threat. As the guides says it's not that hard to remove once you are able to stop the Desktop Defender 2010 process. After you kill this off you should not have too many other issues.
I also did have to re-set IE
