How Did I get infected with Smart Protection 2012?

The short answer here is your computer did not have an active antivirus client that could block the virus from installing on your computer.  If you were using a free based security client, that is the reason you were infected.  Free antivirus clients are great but should not be relied on to stop the latest virus threats out there like Smart Protection 2012 including System Progressive Protection

It's not uncommon for users to get tricked into installing malware like Smart Protection 2012.  The end user may want to watch a video online or they follow a social link from a trusted website.  They then are prompted to install an update or video codec but really it's a virus.  Once installed the virus goes to work and then the user is infected with clients like Smart Protection 2012.

What is Smart Protection 2012 Doing to My Computer Right Now?

Smart Protection 2012 Manual Removal Procedures

The first step you must take in order to remove Smart Protection 2012 is to stop the following process. Watch the video for guidance.

  • [random].exe ( Example is gAoGm02900.exe ) Your file trace will be named different.

To Stop this process you can either browse to the file location shown below and re-name the file first and then restart your computer. Then browse to that file location again and delete the file.

The next step in System Tool 2011 removal is to delete the following file:

Windows XP:

  • C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Data[random][random].exe
  • New Path C:Documents and SettingsUSER NAMELocal SettingsApplication Data

Windows Vista/7:

  • C:ProgramData[random characters ][random characters].exe
  • New Path C:UsersUSER NAMEAppDataLocal

Once you have deleted the above executable, Smart Protection 2012 will no longer be running. At this time you need to run a full virus scan. RUN A SCAN. We recommend Spyware Doctor with Antivirus. You need to ensure no other viruses are on your computer.

If you find this threat too hard to remove yourself and need an expert we recommend www.pcninja.com . They charge far less than others and are great at what they do.

To Stop this process you can

A. You can use the above folder paths to find this file. It should be hiding in one of them. You may need to show hidden files and folders. If that is the case you can read this guide http://www.removevirus.org/show-hidden-files-and-folders. Once you are in the folder you can sort the files by date. This helps to reduce the possibilities down to like 2-3 files. From there pick the date you became infected and re-name the file then re-boot and delete the file the next time you log-in.

B.  Boot into Safe Mode and delete the file. Same as the above but only the process should not be running so you can just delete it.

C:  Use the Task Manager  to find the location of the file and re-name it then delete after re-boot. Most people will have this disabled and not working. However some users can use it the very second you log into the operating system. You have about 10 seconds to locate the file before the Task Manager will close.

D:  Log-into another users account and see if you can delete the file.

E:  Start the Task Manager the very second you login and terminate the process that way.

The next step in Smart Protection 2012 removal is to delete the following file. You NEED to re-boot your computer first if you re-named the file as you can not remove a file that is running.

If you are unable to find the Executable you need to delete then you should boot into safe mode with Networking and install the Spyware Doctor with Antivirus Client and run a full scan.
